Mattel Game Studios Launches First Game Skeletor: Until Next Time

Mattel Game Studios has launched its first self-published game, Skeletor: Until Next Time, a tie-in with the upcoming Masters of the Universe film set to premiere on June 5. This game, available now on iOS and Android, is a lane runner reminiscent of Subway Surfers. Developed in collaboration with outsourcing and co-development firm Amber, Skeletor marks a significant step for Mattel, which has primarily licensed its intellectual properties to other developers in the past.

Skeletor: Until Next Time is the first of two titles expected from Mattel Game Studios this year, though details about the second game have yet to be revealed. Earlier in 2023, Mattel partnered with Canadian studio Uken to launch Mattel Match, a 3D match puzzler featuring well-known brands such as Barbie, Hot Wheels, and Uno.

Why it matters

In recent years, Mattel has increased its focus on mobile gaming, highlighted by its acquisition of NetEase's 50% stake in the joint venture Mattel163 for $159 million. Together, they previously released four games based on Mattel IP, including Uno!, Uno Wonder, Phase 10, and Skip Bo, which collectively attracted 20 million monthly active users and over 550 million downloads worldwide by February 2026. As Mattel's chairman and CEO Ynon Kreiz stated in February, "Our portfolio of iconic brands lends itself perfectly to the digital world, and the acquisition will strengthen our position and accelerate our presence in a large, high-growth market."
