Girls’ Frontline Concludes Main Story After 8 Years

The main storyline of Girls' Frontline has officially come to a close after eight years, with the developers confirming that the game will continue to operate without any imminent shutdown. Launched by MICA Team in Mainland China in May 2016 and globally in May 2018, Girls’ Frontline is a turn-based strategy game where players collect and command female android characters known as T-Dolls, each associated with real-world firearms.

The latest update for the global server has provided the long-awaited conclusion to the main story, tying up narrative threads that connect directly to the sequel, Girls Frontline 2: Exilium. Over the course of its ten-year lifespan, the game expanded from its initial premise involving a rookie Commander and the AR Team amidst a post-apocalyptic setting, evolving into a complex narrative that explores themes of free will, artificial intelligence, and humanity. The final chapter, titled Quantum Fluctuation (Episode 15.9), saw its rollout across all servers from 2025 to 2026, marking the end of the journey that began with its global launch in 2018.

The timeline of Girls’ Frontline is structured into four seasons. The prologue began in 2016, introducing players to a conflict in 2062 involving rogue T-Dolls. Season 1 covers Chapters 1 to 6 and details the Sangvis Ferri War, revealing crucial connections between M4A1 and the rogue AI ELISA. Season 2, spanning Chapters 7 to 10, shifts focus to relic technology and the emergence of deeper conspiracies. In Season 3, Chapters 11 to 13, the conflict intensifies as the three factions—Griffin, Sangvis Ferri, and Iron Blood— vie for humanity's future, exposing the true villain, William.

Season 4, which encompasses Chapters 14 to 15, culminates in the Battle of Frankfurt in 2064, where the Commander directly confronts William. The true ending grants all Griffin T-Dolls their freedom, albeit with the caveat that they cannot seek out the Commander. M4A1 makes a poignant final appearance, maintaining her identity through a fusion with Lunasia. The narrative concludes with credits rolling and players who witnessed the ending rewarded with the achievement: “Thank you for being with us.” The final credit theme, “No Why” by Ghost Final and vocalist Kinoko, resonates with memories of the game's journey.

Looking ahead, the Girls' Frontline universe will continue with various spin-offs and a direct sequel. Girls’ Frontline 2: Exilium is set ten years later, in 2074, where the Commander has taken on the role of a bounty hunter post-disbandment of Griffin & Kryuger. Neural Cloud runs parallel to the original story, set in a virtual reality world during the events of Girls' Frontline. Additionally, Reverse Collapse: Code Name Bakery serves as a remake of a 2013 game and is set during the First Antarctic War.

Why it matters

In an industry where many gacha games end abruptly, Girls’ Frontline stands out for its commitment to narrative closure. Sunborn has established a reputation for maintaining its games, and after nearly a decade of storytelling, it has concluded its saga on its own terms, highlighting the significance of freedom and identity through the lens of a strategy game about android soldiers. The developers have assured players that while the main story has concluded, updates and new content will continue to be released.
