Runesmith: A Dwarven Tactical RPG Announced for PC

Terahard Studios has unveiled Runesmith, a tactical RPG centered around dwarven lore that combines rune-forging, tavern brawls, and chaotic status-effect interactions. The game will be available on PC through Steam, though a release date is yet to be announced. CEO Aris Tsevrenis described Runesmith as a long-awaited project for the studio, marking their first true RPG in the 13 years since its inception. He expressed a deep affection for fantasy dwarves, noting their rich lore and how they inspire creativity in gameplay.

In Runesmith, players will step into the shoes of a fantasy dwarf, engaging in activities such as hammering runes into mythril, consuming vast amounts of ale, and resolving conflicts through both combat and humor. The goal is to assemble a group of dubious adventurers to confront a powerful villain, not out of a desire to save the world, but to settle a debt. The narrative emphasizes the dwarven ethos that no one cheats a dwarf without consequences.

Key features include a complex rune-smithing crafting system that allows players to forge weapons, armor, and magical items through an extensive rune engraving mechanism. Players can experiment with rune interactions, leading to both beneficial effects and potential disasters. In addition to crafting, players will experience the life of a dwarf by drinking at taverns, engaging in brawls, and taking on questionable jobs, all while motivated by spite and greed.

Combat in Runesmith promises to be dynamic, where each encounter can lead to unpredictable outcomes due to the unique status effects created by rune interactions. The game encourages creativity and a touch of recklessness, offering a fresh take on turn-based RPG mechanics. Players will navigate a richly populated fantasy world filled with eccentric characters, including merchants and adventurers, who often make the surrounding monsters appear tame.
