Tencent Dives into India's Orange Economy with $1M Pledge
Tencent is throwing down more than ₹100 million (around $1.04 million) to supercharge India’s Orange Economy, aiming to bolster the Animation, Visual Effects, Gaming, Comics, and Extended Reality (AVGC-XR) ecosystem. This isn’t just spare change; it’s a multi-year commitment that aims to reach a whopping 10,000 students annually through initiatives like the National Game Jam.
During the "Tencent | Building India’s Orange Economy Together" event, Tencent inked three-year Memorandums of Understanding with the Services Export Promotion Council and the Game Developers Association of India (GDAI). These agreements are set to create pathways for aspiring developers, with plans for training programs and active participation in the Indian Game Developers Conference.
Danny Marti, Tencent’s head of public policy and global affairs, emphasized that this initiative goes beyond mere financial investment. "We want to work with local partners to build practical pathways for talent, creators, and studios," he stated, showcasing a vision that combines India’s creative prowess with Tencent’s industry know-how.
This partnership aligns with India’s ambitious goal of training and employing two million AVGC-XR professionals by 2030. GDAI CEO Shruti Verma noted that India is on the brink of becoming a global hub for game development. "Through this partnership with Tencent, we aim to strengthen the talent pipeline through grassroots skilling, mentorship, and deeper developer engagement," she said.
Why it matters
With initiatives like these, Tencent is not just investing in programs; they’re laying the groundwork for a vibrant, globally competitive gaming ecosystem right from India. Buckle up, the future of gaming talent is looking bright!
