Orna Survives Eight Years Defying Mobile Gaming Trends

Since its launch in 2016, Orna has distinguished itself as a robust alternative to the flurry of location-based games that followed Pokémon Go. This fantasy-RPG has amassed 4.5 million downloads, crafted initially by a single developer. Unlike its competitors such as Harry Potter: Wizards Unite and The Walking Dead: Our World, Orna has thrived without succumbing to monetization trends. Northern Forge, the studio behind Orna, maintains a lean team of just nine employees and has steadfastly avoided incorporating pay-to-win mechanics, paywalls, or gacha elements over its eight-year lifespan. Founder Nate Beacham attributes the game's success to prioritizing community building over profit-driven design, stating, “Our survival comes down to the fact that we chose to build a strong community instead of an economy first.” Beacham emphasizes that sustainable gameplay does not require exploitative monetization strategies. As the community and team expanded, Northern Forge introduced new paid content that was entirely optional, ensuring players' trust remained intact. The studio has fostered its community through platforms like Discord and has often recruited from its player base, benefiting from their existing knowledge and passion. This connection not only strengthens development but also enriches the player experience. Beacham highlights Orna's impact on players' physical health and mental well-being through its gamified walking features, mirroring the fitness aspects seen in Pokémon Go. The game's community has even contributed to localizing Orna into 18 languages. As Northern Forge prepares for a content drop at the 2026 Green Game Jam, it remains committed to human-driven design, rejecting the use of AI in their development process. Beacham asserts, “If it’s in contrast to the way a lot of the industry is heading, that’s okay with us. We believe it’s a huge USP and our community is all about it.”
