Pokémon Go marks 10 years with over $9 billion in revenue
Pokémon Go has crossed the impressive milestone of over $9 billion in revenue since its launch a decade ago. This location-based augmented reality game, developed by Niantic and now part of Scopely following a $3.5 billion acquisition of Niantic's games team in 2025, celebrated its 10th anniversary on July 6, 2026. Players have spent nearly $9.1 billion globally across the App Store and Google Play, not accounting for additional earnings from partnerships, alternative app stores, or the Pokémon Go web shop, which offers better in-game purchase deals.
User spending between Google Play and the App Store has been nearly balanced, with $4.4 billion and $4.6 billion respectively. Apple users account for 51% of total spending. Over the past decade, Pokémon Go has secured its place as the fifth highest-grossing mobile game, surpassing titles like Clash of Clans and Genshin Impact. Only Honor of Kings, PUBG Mobile, Candy Crush Saga, and Roblox have outperformed it since 2016.
The United States leads player spending, contributing $3.5 billion, which represents 39% of the global total. Japan follows with $2.7 billion (30%), while Germany trails significantly with $451.2 million (5%). This spending trend has remained consistent, with the U.S. continuing to lead in fresh spending since the anniversary, adding $261.7 million post-July 6, 2025.
Interestingly, Jupiter Hadley, a Pokémon Go ambassador, noted that players are more engaged with the game’s mechanics than nostalgia for the brand itself. After a promising start, where Pokémon Go made over $1 billion in its first year, revenues dipped but rebounded dramatically in the third year, peaking during the pandemic through the sale of Pokémon Go Coins and Remote Raid Tickets. In its fifth year, revenues soared to a record $1.4 billion, marking a 51% increase year-over-year.
Despite this success, the game has seen a decline in revenue over the past five years, dropping to $6.8 billion by year ten. However, Niantic claims that Pokémon Go has continued to grow year-over-year for three consecutive years as of the acquisition by Scopely. As of March 2025, the game maintained about 20 million weekly active players, with around 10 million logging in daily.
Why it matters
To commemorate its 10th anniversary, Pokémon Go Fest 2026 is scheduled for July 11th and 12th, inviting millions to a global event featuring Mewtwo and Zeraora, marking a significant occasion in the game's history.
