PlayStudios shutters Tetris Block Party after 177 job cuts

Key takeaways

  • 177 jobs cut and four studios closed
  • Tetris Block Party: $8.1M IAP revenue from 5.6M downloads (AppMagic)
  • Up to $3.5M impairment charge booked in Q3, results due Nov 9
  • Renewal programme aims to save $39M

PlayStudios has closed Tetris Block Party following a major restructuring that cut 177 jobs and shuttered four studios, the company confirmed via reporting cited by PocketGamer.biz. The shutdown is part of a pair of cost-saving programmes: Reinvention, which trimmed $29 million in costs, and Renewal, which aims to save another $39 million.

AppMagic estimates, as reported by MobileGamer.biz, attribute $8.1 million in in-app purchase revenue to Tetris Block Party from 5.6 million downloads; that figure excludes advertising and webshop income. PlayStudios’ financial filings show daily active users for the title slid from more than 135,000 after the game’s first four months to roughly 123,000 by June 2026, and the company reported challenges sustaining engagement and monetisation.

The company said the closure will trigger an impairment charge of up to $3.5 million in its third-quarter results, due on November 9. PlayStudios secured exclusive mobile rights to the Tetris franchise in 2021 and extended that licensing deal by five years in 2023. Tetris Block Party isn’t the only retired Tetris spin-off: PlayStudios previously closed Tetris Block Blast, Tetris World Tour and Tetris Story.

Why it matters

PlayStudios continues to operate its primary Tetris mobile title, which has an estimated 115 million downloads and $2.8 million in in-app purchase revenue since 2020. Quiet but concrete: the company is pursuing another round of savings while absorbing a measurable one-off hit to Q3 results, and its main Tetris app remains live amid the cuts.
