Nintendo Unveils Pictonico, A Photo-Based Game Launching May 28

Nintendo is stepping into the photo-fueled fun zone with its upcoming mobile game, Pictonico, set to launch on May 28. This new title will be available on both the App Store and Google Play, and it brings a unique twist reminiscent of WarioWare, leveraging images from your own camera roll. Co-developed with Intelligent Systems, the same team behind the WarioWare series, Pictonico aims to blend creativity with gameplay in a fresh way.

The game follows a ‘free-to-start’ model, allowing players to dive into a selection of minigames for free. However, access to the complete experience requires purchasing additional content in the form of 'volumes.' According to the App Store, 'Volume 1' will be priced at $7.99, while 'Volume 2' will be available for $5.99. For those excited to see what Pictonico has to offer, a trailer is already available.

Just last year, it seemed like Nintendo might be shifting its focus away from mobile games with the anticipated launch of the Switch 2. However, a February 2025 earnings call revealed that Nintendo is still actively developing new mobile titles. In an unexpected turn, the company launched Fire Emblem Shadows in September 2025, which unfortunately did not resonate well with critics or players. Despite this, Nintendo has continued to expand its mobile offerings, introducing various apps including the Nintendo Music app and character-focused games like Hello, Mario and Hello, Yoshi, which let users interact with the iconic characters in playful ways.

Why it matters

The last time we checked in on Nintendo's mobile endeavors was in October 2025, shortly after Fire Emblem Shadows hit the market. At that point, Sensor Tower estimated that Nintendo had raked in nearly $2.3 billion and achieved over 816 million downloads on iOS and Android since the debut of Super Mario Run back in September 2016.
