Gray Zone Warfare launches Rogue Ops update on 26th, moves from pre-alpha to alpha

Key takeaways

  • Rogue Ops released on the 26th; Gray Zone Warfare moved from pre-alpha to alpha
  • Over 1.7 million copies sold since April 2024 early access launch
  • Adds 7 new guns, 3 major La Mang locations, and 15+ smaller areas; upgraded to Unreal Engine 5.7

Madfinger Games released Rogue Ops, the fourth major update for Gray Zone Warfare, on the 26th and moved the open-world tactical shooter from pre-alpha into alpha. The update adds a player-owned Hideout system, introduces smuggling and hunting operations, expands the La Mang region, and upgrades the game to Unreal Engine 5.7.

At the center of Rogue Ops is the new Hideout feature, a private operational base where players can craft medical supplies, manufacture illicit drugs, process sensitive military tech, and build specialist equipment. Items produced in the Hideout may be sold directly to merchants, or taken onto riskier smuggling runs across La Mang for larger rewards. Madfinger says these systems give players income options and strategic trade-offs; Marek Rabas, the studio’s CEO and creative director, called Rogue Ops “an important milestone” for the game and a meaningful step toward his studio’s vision.

Smuggling and hunting operations are playable in both PvP and PvE. On smuggling sorties, mercenaries must transport valuable cargo to designated drop points while defending against rival operatives trying to intercept the shipment. In PvE mode those adversaries are controlled by AI, letting solo or cooperative players face scripted threats instead of human opponents. The update also adds multi-character support so users can play several characters within a single account.

La Mang receives a substantial expansion in Rogue Ops: three major high-difficulty locations — an abandoned psychiatric hospital, a military research facility, and a radio observatory — plus more than 15 smaller sites scattered through the region. The patch brings seven new firearms, hundreds of weapon parts, and a range of new equipment to support varied loadouts and mission types. Behind the scenes, Madfinger upgraded the project to Unreal Engine 5.7, targeted performance optimizations, and pushed broad improvements across AI, animation, audio, combat, and stamina systems.

Rogue Ops also introduces the game’s first Soft Wipe system: player progression is retained while owned equipment and in-game currency are reset. Madfinger added extra anti-cheat measures alongside the engine upgrade to improve security and to keep competitive systems fair. Gray Zone Warfare has sold over 1.7 million copies since its early access launch in April 2024 and continues to receive major updates on a regular cadence.

Why it matters

Takeaway: expect operational choices to matter more — Hideouts let you manufacture and sell gear or risk higher payouts by hauling contraband on smuggling runs, while the Soft Wipe will clear equipment and currency but preserve overall progression so accounts carry forward even after the reset.
