New Zealand Games Industry Hits $1 Billion Revenue Milestone Early

New Zealand Games Industry Hits $1 Billion Revenue Milestone Early

New Zealand's game industry has surpassed $1 billion in revenue, achieving this milestone two years ahead of the initial forecast. This rapid growth underscores the sector's significant contribution to the national economy, with the New Zealand Game Developers Association (NZGDA) noting that the industry is expanding at more than 20 times the global average. The success is attributed in part to government-supported initiatives like the Game Development Sector Rebate (GDSR) and funding from the Centre of Digital Excellence (CODE), which have collectively yielded an estimated eight-to-one return on investment for the government. Originally, the NZGDA projected that the industry would reach the $1 billion mark by 2028, following a previous revenue of $758.9 million last year and a workforce increase of over 29%. NZGDA executive director Joy Keene emphasized the collaborative efforts between government and industry as key to this achievement, linking the growth directly to economic benefits for New Zealand. She also highlighted the importance of establishing educational and vocational pathways to sustain future growth in the sector, which presents significant job opportunities and resilience against global economic fluctuations. Comprehensive statistics for the current year will be detailed in the NZGDA's annual industry report, set to be released in September.
