Global Games Revenue Exceeds $200 Billion, Mobile Contributes $113 Billion

In 2025, global games revenue reached $201.6 billion, marking the first time the industry surpassed the $200 billion threshold, according to Newzoo. Mobile gaming continues to dominate, generating $113.3 billion and comprising more than half of the total market revenue. This figure reflects a 10.7% increase from the previous year, contributing to an overall market growth of 9.1% year-on-year.

The report indicates that mobile growth has outpaced earlier estimates related to direct consumer revenues, mini-game ecosystems, and Tencent's performance. However, there was a decline in global download volumes, suggesting that revenue growth is increasingly reliant on enhanced monetization strategies rather than merely expanding player bases. User acquisition costs are on the rise, with data from Adjust showing a 30% increase in the global cost per install, reaching $0.56 in 2025, while paid-to-organic installs rose by 61%.

Mobile gaming generated more revenue than both PC and console combined in 2025. PC revenue was recorded at $43.6 billion, marking a 12% year-on-year growth, while console revenue grew by 2.8% to $44.7 billion. Looking ahead, Newzoo forecasts mobile revenue to continue its upward trajectory, predicting it will reach $121.1 billion in 2026. Direct-to-consumer channels are becoming increasingly significant, with annualized D2C transaction volumes hitting $1 billion in March 2026, doubling from $500 million in July 2025.

The report highlights the concurrent expansion of merge games and 4X strategy titles, with Chinese publishers leading these categories through effective live operations and increased user acquisition spending. Additionally, mini-game monetization in China is identified as a key growth driver.

Despite the growth, memory costs are affecting all platforms. The report notes a 6% year-on-year decline in global smartphone shipments in Q1 2026 and warns that rising hardware costs could impact growth markets, particularly where mid-range devices are crucial.

Why it matters

Regionally, Europe emerged as a strong performer for mobile gaming, with a revenue increase of 15.5% year-on-year, continuing a three-year streak of growth above the global average. The Middle East and Africa saw the fastest overall market growth at 15%, while Latin America expanded by 9.6%. Newzoo projects the global games market will continue to grow, reaching $234.4 billion by 2028, influenced by factors such as increasing hardware costs, the commercial impact of upcoming titles like GTA VI, and the ongoing evolution of mobile monetization.
