Pokémon Champions will receive a content update on September 9 that adds Regulation M-C and a set of Mega-evolving Pokémon with Z suffixes, the developers announced. The game is co-planned and produced with GAME FREAK Inc., and developed by The Pokémon Works.
Regulation M-C will be in effect through December 2 at 10:59 AM, and it limits which Pokémon and held items are legal for battle. Under M-C, certain Pokémon can Mega Evolve only if they hold a Mega Stone, and Mega Evolution is restricted to a single use per match. New entries arriving with the update include Mega Absol Z, Mega Lucario Z, and Mega Haxorus Z, among other Pokémon.
The update lists each new Mega with distinct traits. Mega Absol Z is a Dark/Ghost disaster Pokémon with the Sharpness ability, which boosts slashing-move power by 1.5×. Mega Haxorus Z is a Dragon-type Mach Pokémon with Levitate, making it immune to Ground-type moves and effects like Spikes, Toxic Spikes, and Sticky Web. Mega Lucario Z debuts a previously unseen ability called Wave Guard, which halves damage taken from contact moves.
Niantic and the team also published a new video on the official YouTube channel showcasing Mega Absol Z and Mega Lucario Z. Pokémon Champions is free to download from the Nintendo eShop, Google Play, and the Apple App Store, and further details are available on the game's official website.
Why it matters
Takeaway: Regulation M-C’s Dec. 2 cutoff and the single-use Mega rule mean teams will need to budget that one Mega activation carefully—and Lucario’s Wave Guard gives a new defensive option opponents will have to plan around.
